Abstract

Objectives: This review paper presents the results of the Oncoforum project: a selection of the major key points on prostate cancer (PCa) presented during urological and oncological 2006 annual meetings. Methods: The most interesting data on PCa were selected and presented during a satellite symposium held at the European Association of Urology (EAU) 2007 annual meeting. Results: A major topic related to diagnosis of PCa concerned the observation that a consensus exists that a distinct PSA threshold for the early detection of clinically relevant PCa cannot yet be identified. With regards to radical treatment, it was highlighted that the Partin tables may underestimate the risk of lymph node involvement in patients with clinically localised PCa. The major key points presented on hormone therapy of PCa involved an analysis of the EORTC 30891 trial, which showed that patients older than 70 yr with T0-4 N0-2 MO PCa and prostate-specific antigen (PSA) <= 50 ng/ml may not benefit from immediate hormone treatment. However, patients with a PSA 8-50 ng/ml and a PSA doubling time < 12 mo are at high risk of progression and death due to PCa and may need immediate hormone treatment. With regards to hormone-refractory PCa, it was shown that repeat treatment with low-dose docetaxel may be effective in patients who have a PSA relapse after initial docetaxel treatment. Conclusions: This selection of key data on PCa presented at the 2006 oncological and urological congresses highlight a continuing interest in the diagnosis and treatment of PCa. The Oncoforum project aims to update urologists in an efficient manner on the most interesting data on PCa and will continue to do so in 2007. (c) 2007 European Association of Urology.
